Château Guillermo Featured in L’Ardennais: A Dream Restored in the Heart of the Ardennes

This summer, L’Ardennais shone a spotlight on the timeless charm of Château Guillermo — and we couldn’t be more honored. Nestled in the quaint village of La Moncelle, in the heart of the French Ardennes, our beloved château was recently featured in the regional paper’s special series on castle life. The story? One of love at first sight, slow restoration, and a Flemish dream come true.

A Modest Castle With a Storied Past

Dating back to the 19th century, the castle has witnessed war, peace, and generations of change. Originally built by Count De Viry, it was once a noble retreat for leisure and hunting. During World War II, it was occupied by German forces — traces of that chapter still linger inside. Following the war, it changed hands, eventually being purchased by Edel Van Riet’s father in 2009.

What started as a dream passed down from father to son became a mission. In 2023, Edel inherited the property and renamed it Château Guillermo. Since then, he has devoted himself — heart, soul, and toolbox — to restoring its original beauty.

“I want to keep the soul and the historic side of the castle,” Edel shared with L’Ardennais. “But the materials are hard to find and quite expensive.”

From Ruin to Revival

When Edel took over, the castle was hardly habitable. No electricity. No heating. No proper plumbing. The water ran brown, and tree branches brushed the windows from what was essentially a wild forest. But Edel rolled up his sleeves and began, bit by bit, to breathe life back into

He started with the four-hectare park — once overgrown and chaotic — and then moved inside. Room by room, he restored the castle’s charm, honoring its original style while injecting fresh life into each space. Today, the château boasts seven uniquely designed bedrooms and three period-style bathrooms spread over 600m².

“I like to make the rooms different and design the plans,” says Edel, who continues to reimagine and rework new spaces whenever there’s time between guest stays.

A Passion Project with Purpose

What began as a personal dream is now a growing sanctuary for travelers. Château Guillermo is open for weekend and weekday rentals, with rates ranging from €400 to €1,200 per night depending on the season. Edel is also working on exciting additions: a bar, a games or cinema room in the attic, and even a tower observatory.

“We need the rental income to carry out renovations,” Edel explains, “but the goal is always the same: to restore this beautiful building and share it with the surrounding area.”

Castles Are for Everyone

Whether you come to stay, host an event, or simply escape into the calm of the Ardennes, Château Guillermo is meant to be lived in — not just admired from afar. The soul of the place isn't just in its walls; it's in the love, time, and dreams poured into every stone.

And for that we say thank you to L’Ardennais for helping us share our story.
